K-Gr 2-With one sentence and one photograph per page, these creature profiles provide just the right amount of text and visuals for new readers. Each book covers physical features, habitat, food, and behaviors with cohesive text, moving from general ("Cockroaches have six long legs.") to slightly more specific ("Their legs help them run fast."). Closing sections on behavior highlight one general topic, such as snail slime or spider webs, which keeps the focus tight and clear. Photos are large and usually match the text well. Most images are full-body views that are useful, but not very exciting. With a few exceptions, the photographs offer strong visual context for the words. A labeled photo at the end notes key body parts. VERDICT Well-organized information and solid, if unspectacular, photographs make this series an additional choice for younger readers. © Copyright 2016.
